Every WordPress website will have tweaks that need to be made. Permian Trader is no exception.

I have my standard list of default plugins, and they all have my usual standard configuration. In this overview, I’ll talk about the tweaks made specifically to the Permian Trader WordPress website. As much as possible, I try to find ways of making WordPress tweaks that can be done by anybody, not just a developer.

A3 Lazy Load – I had to make an exception for the Classifieds Edit page. This was simply done in the “Exclude by URI’s and Page Types” setting. Simply adding (without the quotes): “/classifieds/edit/” resolved the problem of the edit page not displaying properly.

Real Time Find and Replace – A number of places I wanted to change how both the Classifieds and the Business Directory were outputting text. It is easy enough to create template files and put them in the child theme. Even EASIER, and not theme dependent, is to use “Real Time Find and Replace”. After all the processing is done, just before it is sent to the browser (or cache), this plugin will search and replace text according to the specified rules. I used this to eliminate some titles, add bolding, remove some words, that sort of thing. This project is the first that I’ve used this plugin, and it was very handy. Just to note, this is a plugin that offers the ability to make these text changes from within the dashboard, not requiring to futz about with HTML template files.

My Custom Functions – It is straight forward to add functions to the functions.php file. I usually use the functions.php file, myself. However, I had read about this plugin, and I wanted to test it. It is a simple plugin to add, and then, it is easy from within the dashboard to add needed functions. I added several minor functions to tweak, but the primary one was to welcome a logged in user by first name.

WP Add Custom CSS – This is a great little plugin to add CSS. This will apply CSS per site, or per page – and it will do this independent of your theme. I always install this plugin, but in this case, I used it to specifically change how things were arranged, hidden or colored for the Classifieds and the Business Directory. Example:

.awpcp-payment-terms-list {

display:none;

}

This was just a quick little snippet to hide the payment terms. The Classifieds are free on Permian Trader, so why show payment terms?

Yoast – As mentioned prior, I usually use “All In One SEO Pack”. However, the Business Directory plugin was built to interface with Yoast, and did not work so well with All In One (I tried). So, I switched to Yoast, and configured it to specifically output my preferences for the Business Directory, and the rest of the site as well.

Any WordPress website you build with a pre-made Theme, and with adding plugins that add new functionality that is displayed, will require tweaks. In the case of Permian Trader, I am using the GeneratePress Premium plugin, which adds an enormous amount of display configuration via the theme customizer. When I was using just the free version, I used CSS to make a substantial number of tweaks.

If you are building a basic website, using WordPress, then your task is simpler. Of paramount importance is installing an SEO plugin, and actually using it properly. ALL of it, everything, is important – but some are more important than others. After having an SEO plugin installed, configured properly, the next important thing is content. No matter how good your designer, no matter how optimized your website – without great content, you are wasting your time (unless you simply wanted something to reference, and Search Engine relevance is NOT important).
