Specific Tweaks for Permian Trader

In general, I have a selection of plugins I use on every WordPress site, with some variances depending on the host. Additional plugins are utilized for specific functionality.

One of the very useful things regarding WordPress is the wide gamut of plugins available in the WordPress ecosystem. A phenomenal number are free. Many are free, with additional functionality available with a paid upgrade.

In this article, I will cover the additional plugins I used that are outside of my normal default installed plugins. These additional plugins were installed to meet the objectives of the Permian Trader project functionality.

List of additional plugins.

(The default plugins are in this article.)

  • GP Premium – GeneratePress Premium Plugins.
  • 404page – Smart Custom 404 Error Page.
  • LoginPress – Easily facilitates tweaking the WordPress login form.
  • Nav Menu Roles – Hide menu links based on roles.
  • No Weak Passwords – Blocks users from being able to use common passwords.
  • S2 Member Framework – Easily restricts content based on membership. For Permian Trader, will only show specified administrative pages to logged in users.
  • Yoast SEO – I prefer “All In One SEO Pack”, but both the Business Directory Plugin and the Classified plugin were specifically written to work with Yoast. I acquiesced, reluctantly, and am using Yoast.
  • Another WordPress Classifieds Plugin – Great plugin for Classifieds.
  • Business Directory Plugin – Great plugin to create business Directory
  • Business Directory Plugin – Enhanced Categories Module. Free by email subscription.
  • Business Directory Plugin – Regions Module. Paid add-on module.
  • Custom Content Shortcode – Easily grab various fields from content and display with a shortcode.
  • Fast User Switching – Easily switch to any user without the whole complexity of logging out and then logging in as the other user. Also allows switching without a password.
  • Login or Logout Menu item – Easily adds a login/logout to the menu, and setup redirects.
  • My Custom Functions – Avoids editing the functions.php, code snippets can be added via the frontend.
  • Nav Menu Roles– Lets you hide/show custom menu items based on user roles.
  • Real-Time Find and Replace – “Find and replace” rules that are executed AFTER a page is generated by WordPress, but BEFORE it is sent to a user’s browser. A way of modifying text/content without editing actual content.
  • Remove Dashboard Access – Removes the dashboard access and popup from logged in users. In the case of Permian Trader, logged in users are given access to administer their Business Listing and/or Classifieds, but do not need access to the dashboard/backend.

Building Permian Trader from scratch with all of this functionality would be very time consuming, and costly. Fortunately, with the WordPress Plugin ecosystem, it is somewhat like a Lego set. Assemble the pieces (with the ability to tweak), and you have a product that does what you need.

Next post I’ll discuss in detail some of the tweaks used for Permian Trader.
